Mountain T.O.P. Organization

Mountain T.O.P. (Tennessee Outreach Project) is an Interdenominational Christian Mission. They are affiliated with the Tennessee Conference of the United Methodist Church. The purpose is to provide ministry in the Cumberland Mountains of Tennessee, with physical, spiritual, social and emotional support for the community.

Mountain T.O.P. 2012

Again this year I am able to make the trip to Altamont, Tennessee, to do some home repair in Grundy county. This time though is a very different trip. We planned an extra day in order to do some sight-seeing along the way. We also were able to leave about an hour later than normal, and with only two vehicles(a rendezvous in Effingham...) it was easier to schedule fuel stops on the way down. All day I have been thinking that the last time I was down was in 2010, but when I checked it was in 2009. Where does the time go? I am thankful for the opportunity to make the trip this year.

We were hoping to have enough time to stop at a Civil War battle ground before arriving at the B&B, but we ended up running out of time. Our first night is being spent (as I write this) at a working Tennessee Walking Horse farm. There is a Bed and Breakfast with a number of rooms available.  The more trips I make, the more people I get to meet. Today when we arrived we met up with a MTOP friend from Shelbyville, TN, a MTOP friend from Georgia, and we spoke with a MTOP friend on the way from the Detroit area (Go Tigers!). On Thursday, we are touring the Jack Daniels Distillery in Lynchburg, having lunch at Miss Mary Bobo's boarding house (with more friends...), and then continuing on to Altamont by way of the Cowan Railway Museum and the Beersheba Springs Porcelain company. We need to be in Altimont in time to check in, settle in, and get prepared for dinner.

I am not sure what type of project I will be working on this weekend, but I am looking forward to a rewarding trip. More later, with pictures.

Fall AIM trip 2009

Another trip to Altamont, Tennessee and I had a wonderful time. I met some new friends, saw a few familiar faces, and had good company for the drive down and back.

2009 Fall Trip- AIM

I filled out and sent the forms for the fall AIM trip in August. When I submitted, I was first on a waiting list. When people started confirming group size it was discovered that I would be able to go (had my fingers crossed). I am pretty excited about the time to be able to travel back to Tennessee and take part in this important mission program. I think it is important to give back to the community, and count the people in need in this part of our country as community. There are a lot of programs that help the needs of those around the world, but I think sometimes we forget the people who need help at home. I am glad that I have the ability to give some of my time and energy in order to help someone with a basic need of shelter. I am hopeful there will be some familiar faces, but I also know there are some new friends to meet.

I will provide an update on my trip after I return on the 18th of October.

2007 Fall Trip - AIM

These are pictures I took in Tennessee while on a mission trip to Mountain T.O.P. We started by doing some drywall work on the inside of the house on day one. The crew put drywall around two doors, patched a spot in the bathroom, and sanded a bedroom. The bedroom should be ready for paint after our second day. The doors will need additional mudding before they are ready to paint. We worked outside on day two to replace the vinyl underpinning, which was cracking due to age. We only had enough time in our schedule to do the back of the house, another crew will have to finish this project.
